What is Holding You Back?

It happens to all of us from time to time, whether we feared trying out for the cheerleading team in high school, lacked the confidence to buffer a potential rejection from a certain crush, or allowed the pressures from our friends and loved ones to prevent us from making a major career move, we have all been held back due to the pressures of an external source.

And we have all suffered the consequences of it as well.

All of us have dreams, goals, and visions that God has given us, but something is holding us back from achieving them.  When this happens we often delay accomplishing/overcoming life’s challenges or miss lifetime opportunities altogether.  The burden lies on us to figure out for ourselves, what is holding us back, and further, what to do about it.

You see, what we often fail to realize is that God has created us individually and with a plan that will bring some good to our lives.  Each plan is different, and shouldn’t be compared to the plans of others.  Despite the differences in God’s plans, however, each plan is meaningful nonetheless.  And while we might not always know the plan God has for us, God most certainly does.  Jeremiah 29:11 reads For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. By becoming intimate with God, we will begin to learn what plans God has in store for each of us.

Yet and still, we often find ourselves in situations that prevent us from leaning entirely on the Lord for strength.  When we do this, we interfere with God’s plan for welfare and not for evil and instead depend on ourselves for resurrectionThis cannot be done because “all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made” John 1:18.  This important reminder is critical for developing a meaningful and long term relationship with Christ.  Without it, you and everyone who lacks this is destined for failure.  You cannot expect to accomplish God’s will, without the will of God.  You see in order for us to truly maximize on God’s plan for us, we have to rely solely on His mercy.

Most often, we are held back from doing God’s plan due to fear.  If you have an intimate and personal relationship with Christ, others might easily judge you if they do not understand it.  This may lead to negative perspectives from people in your lives, often due to their own ignorance.  Instead of educating themselves, they instead pass those ignorance’s on to you.  As a result, you are left to then doubt yourself.  When this happens, it creates a barrier between you and God.  It holds you back.  Don’t let it.

When you are on the verge of realizing the gift that God has given to you, you will likely be faced with additional setbacks.  The devil is alive, and he doesn’t want to see you prosper.  You’ve got to learn to identify his presence and remove him from your plans accordingly.  One way that the devil commonly presents himself is through the presence of your support group.  When you want support more than any other time, the very people who you wish to receive support from, will be the ones to tear you down.  You might then internalize this as further justification that you are wrong, when in reality, the people against you are wrong.  While you’re busy doubting yourself, those against you have already seen your gift and know our worth and are threatened by your ability to succeed.  Instead of them admiring you for your strength, they will interfere with you using it.  Instead of recognizing and asking God to give them the courage that God has given you, they will try to create barriers for you.  Be strong….  Hold fast… and Don’t let them hold you back.

And last but certainly not least, never forget that God works on His timing.  It might not work when we want it to and when it doesn’t it is easy to desire giving up.  But Habakkuk 2:3 holds that For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie.  If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.”  You see, God’s timing is just that, GOD’S TIMING.  It might not come when you want it, but what is yours, will come when it needs to and that’s all there is to it.  Keep waiting and claim your territory…  And no matter what… whatever you do, don’t let anything hold you back.
