Try and fail, but don’t fail to try. ~Stephen Kaggwa
This very title, “If at First You Don’t Succeed… Dust Yourself Off and Try Again” was inspired by none other than the late, Aailyah. Her untimely death marked the cease of an incredible source of strength, inspiration, and encouragement for the hip-hop community. While her presence is no longer with us on earth, her music will remain with us for our lifetime.
Her piece is especially important now, after the fall of Jennifer Lawrence at the 2013 Oscar, Awards. As she accepted the award for best actress, she lost her footing, and well, you know the rest… It was a painfully awkward image for us to watch, that resulted in at least both of her hands and knees joining as one with the intricate steps leading to her pedestal where her Oscar awaited her. Didn’t see it? Click here…
While this mishap was for her “embarrassing” as it would have been for so many of us, it marked a pivotal, teachable, moment for those who look beyond the obvious. You see, her falling represented what happens in each and everyone one of our lives from one time or another. It shows that someone who is beautiful, rich, and famous, can do what you and I do in our everyday lives…
But like Jennifer Lawrence, we can all dust ourselves off and try again… though at times it may seem impossible.
Watching Jennifer Lawrence, reminds me, that nothing worth having comes to us easy. If you want something in life, you’ve got to be willing to fight to get it, even if it means that you fall on your face. Trust me; if Jennifer Lawrence can do it in front of millions of viewers, you and I can too.
So why is that important now? Because there is some area in your life, where you too are falling… Maybe you’re trapped in an unhealthy relationship, that is draining you emotionally and/or physically, maybe your job is mediocre at best, but devastating on most days, maybe your weight has plummeted to an unthinkable number and your health is seriously at risk. These all represent falls in your life, because they are areas of your life where you’re just not performing the way in which you wish to. You’re falling and you’re doing so, miserably.
But there’s news for you…
Dust yourself off and try again! And keep trying… until you get the results that you desire.
How do you do so?
1) Admit that you just fail on your face. One of the first things that Jennifer Lawrence did when she eventually reached the platform, was acknowledge that she was embarrassed. Like with her, that helps to soften the impact of the fall and it normalizes the feeling associated with it Truth is, if you’re falling in something, chances are others would probably feel in a similar way as you if it were happening to them. Hence, own your feelings and come to terms with how difficult it is to fall.
2) Don’t be discouraged. Never forget that all people fall in life, from one time to the next, and you will be no exception.
3) Learn from your falls. Everything that happens to you happens for a reason, but it’s your responsibility to figure those reasons out. Nobody is going to do it for you. So instead of feeling sorry for yourself, figure out what the universe is trying to get you to learn from your mishap.
4) Try again. Try again. Try again. It may seem cliché at this point, but it’s so true. You’re never going to get your needs met, if you are too afraid to try to meet them. So try and keep trying until your ultimate dream comes true.
Whenever you feel that you are reaching your boiling point, and that if you face one more fall in life you think you’re gonna die, remember John 16:33, So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. With God for you, no man shall be against you.
